Which picture below shows the older horse?

If you answered "the one on the right," technically, you are correct!  These two photographs are of the same mare.  The one on the left was taken on December 29, 2003.  The picture on the right was taken June 21, 2004.  Roxy,** therefore, is six months older in the photo on the right than she was in the photo on the left.

Trick question aside, the two pictures dramatically dispel a myth often heard in the horse community: "That horse is skinny because its old."  The truth is that Roxy was skinny because she was not being properly fed and cared for.

We don't know Roxy's precise age, but our best "guesstimate" is that she is in her late 30's.**  She is missing approximately half of her molars but, as illustrated in the June photo, that is of little consequence when she is offered an appropriate diet!

Please visit the Exceptional Elders Gallery to see more examples of senior horses enjoying their Golden Years at home.

**The Lady Roxanne departed this life in January, 2005.  We greatly miss her spirit and Pushy Ol' Broad persona, but know she is watching over the current residents of Traveller's Rest.  Roxy was the epitome of resilience and the ultimate Survivor.  May all Elders, as The Lady did, spend their last years "large and in charge."

"Every horse is good for something.  He could be a cart horse or a lead pony and he's still nice to look at.  You don't throw a whole life away just because he's banged up a little."
